Do YOU KNOW ABOUT REBORN DOLLS?
Originating in the United States, the reborn dolls, literally translated into Italian as “reborn dolls”, have crossed the Atlantic Ocean to become a real and unstoppable success with what we now call the passion “reborn”. But then, what is a reborn doll?
IN A FEW WORDS, WHAT IS A REBORN BABY?
If one had to give a quick and simple definition of what a reborn doll is, then we would say that it is a doll that resembles a real newborn in all respects. They are vinyl dolls, crafted handmade to give them as close a look as possible to that of real babies. A real movement has developed around these dolls, and the artists who create them are called Reborn Artists or Reborners.
These realistic dolls fascinate as much as they disturb, but that doesn’t stop them from sparking passions. Young girls, mothers-to-be, seniors–every generation finds happiness with this plastic baby, each with different motivations.
The ORIGIN AND HISTORY OF THESE VERY REALISTIC BABIES
Although establishing a precise date for the birth of these dolls is a very difficult exercise, we can say that these dolls have been around for some time. The first truly realistic dolls were created in the 30s and were very popular among doll lovers. The art of rebirth and the term “reborn baby” originated in the United States in the late 1990s.
Dolls have always been very popular throughout history, moving from simple children’s toys to coveted collectibles. Some dolls have even become an art form. In this sense, it can be said that reborn babies, with their breathtaking realism, are the true pinnacle of this evolution.
The first reborn babies were made by enthusiasts. From existing dolls, such as the famous baby bath doll for example, they added many details to make them more realistic. They repainted the skin to reveal veins, redness, birthmarks; they added hair, eyelashes and eyebrows; and they could even weigh down the body to give the impression of a real baby when they carried it.
Although these reborn babies were originally created by enthusiasts for enthusiasts, they have become popular and now touch many people around the world. Today there are online communities dedicated to rebirth that support and promote these “fake” babies.
WHO ARE REBORN DOLLS SUITABLE FOR?
These dolls are a hit with women of all age groups. The price from these dolls can range from a few tens of euros, for the simplest versions, to thousands of euros, for exclusive products made by artisans. Reborn dolls can no longer be considered a toy, and because of their hyperrealism they are used for a wide variety of purposes, from supporting young mothers to being used as props in theater or film productions. Even some beneficial effects have been observed in elderly people with Alzheimer’s disease.
HOW BABIES ARE CREATED.
As we just explained, back then people created their own silicone baby from an existing doll by adding many details to push realism. Nowadays, it is possible to buy a complete reborn baby kit to create one from A to Z. Most of these kits contain legs, arms, a head, sometimes a body, some instructions and tools that allow everyone to “give birth” easily.
You can start the reborning process in two ways:
Reborning Process – One starts with a toy doll that is to be disassembled by removing all traces of the factory color until a neutral, clean set of head and limbs is obtained and ready to undergo reborning.
Newborning Process – One starts with a kit consisting of head and limbs, already prepared for application of the technique. These kits are the work of artists and are often in limited series.
Concretely, what is being reborn? The whole process takes a long time. The reborn usually has to work for a week before he gets a chance to see his “baby” finished and ready to receive all his love. During the process, the skin and lips must be painted with several layers of paint; hair, eyelashes and eyebrows must be implanted by hand; eyes added and the body weighed correctly to simulate the weight of a baby.
