Expecto Patronum—the spell that conjured Harry’s magnificent stag Patronus—roughly translates from Latin as “I expect (or await) a guardian,” which fits perfectly. The spell’s actual result—the Patronus itself—has an even more fascinating history. In ancient Rome, the word *patronus* also meant “protector,” but with very different connotations. A *patronus* was a person of high social standing who maintained a “patronage” relationship with a client—often someone less wealthy or of lower social rank. In turn, the word “patronage” likely derived from the Latin term *pater*, meaning “father.” No matter the context or era, the word *patronus* always refers to protection.
