Artist Diary: Skybridge
Life often presents unexpected paths, leading us to journeys we never anticipated. Fifteen years ago, an unusual assignment landed in my lap: to design three fantasy puzzles, including a box design, for a new jigsaw puzzle series. Little did I know that this marked the beginning of an ongoing adventure.
Key Features
- Original Sketches: The initial sketches laid the groundwork for what would evolve into Skybridge, featuring a stark contrast between the dry, hollow world outside and the lush, vibrant inner world.
- Gravitational Dynamics: The second puzzle introduced the unique concept of weightlessness, where opposing gravitational forces interact between the two worlds.
- Character Development: The five main characters represent the diverse ethnic groups within the game, each designed to enhance player engagement.
- Artwork Evolution: A completely revised cover for the game was created, reflecting the current state of the worlds and incorporating publisher feedback to enhance visual appeal.
- Game Board Design: The game board comprises multiple individual parts that work cohesively, integrating new elements introduced during development.
- Cultural Representation: The Godh cards feature unique art styles that reflect the various cultures of Thraen’s inhabitants, providing depth and authenticity to the gameplay experience.
Conclusion
The creative process behind Skybridge has been a fascinating journey of discovery and transformation. Through the development of its artwork and components, the initially abstract concepts have been brought to life, weaving together a rich tapestry of storytelling and gameplay. The collaboration with Michael Rieneck has been particularly rewarding, as both of us have eagerly anticipated each new installment of the project.
Holding the final product in my hands feels surreal after enduring the many ups and downs of its development. I am excited to see Skybridge come to life on gaming tables around the world and hope that players will enjoy the experience as much as we have enjoyed creating it.
