Designer Diary: Treat, Please!

by Courtney Shernan

In the summer of 2019, a moment of inspiration struck while observing a beloved pet. The antics of a playful dog prompted the idea for a board game centered around the theme of a pampered canine attempting to charm its owner. This concept evolved into a deck-building game that combines light-hearted fun with strategic gameplay, aimed at making deck-building accessible to all players.

Key Features

  • Engaging Gameplay: Players take on the role of dogs using behavior cards to gain “cuteness” points. Actions like “Wag Tail” and “Sit on the Human’s Lap” help players achieve objectives such as “Get a Treat” or “Receive Belly Rubs.”
  • Innovative Mechanics: Inspired by mechanics from popular games, the “Take a Nap” option allows players to recover their behavior cards, enhancing strategic choices during gameplay.
  • Dynamic Interaction: The game features an event deck that simulates the human’s daily activities, influencing the dogs’ ability to gain attention and interact effectively.
  • Positive Environment: Focusing on communal and positive interactions, the gameplay reflects a household where dogs compete but share a loving bond.
  • Streamlined Structure: The game has been refined to consist of seven rounds, representing a week in the life of a dog, culminating in an exciting gameplay climax over the weekend.

Conclusion

The journey of developing Treat, Please! has been both challenging and rewarding. From the initial idea sparked by a simple moment with a dog to the iterative design and playtesting phases, every step has contributed to a game that embodies joy and nostalgia for dog lovers. The support from the gaming community and the excitement of sharing this creation with others has made the experience truly fulfilling.

As the game hits the shelves, it is hoped that Treat, Please! will foster connections among players, encouraging them to reminisce about their own cherished pets. The adventure continues as new memories are created, both in the game and in real life, celebrating the love and quirks of our furry companions.
