Designer Diary: Siberian Manhunt
by Jesse Eyer
Concept
The global pandemic brought significant challenges, but it also sparked the creation of Siberian Manhunt. As 2020 progressed and lockdowns continued in Berlin, Jesse Eyer and his wife found themselves craving a more substantial gaming experience that could still be enjoyed in a single evening. This need led to the inspiration drawn from Louis L’Amour’s gripping novel Last of the Breed, which tells the story of a U.S. Air Force pilot escaping captivity in the harsh Siberian wilderness while being pursued by the KGB.
With a sudden burst of creativity, Eyer envisioned a two-player game where one player would take on the role of the fugitive, facing the daily trials of survival, while the other player would command Soviet forces in a relentless manhunt. The game would emphasize hidden movement, reflecting the uncertainty of the fugitive’s whereabouts.
Key Features
- Asymmetrical Gameplay: Players assume different roles, each with unique objectives and challenges.
- Dynamic Energy Management: The fugitive must scavenge for supplies and manage energy, while the Government’s power grows through strategic resources.
- Hidden Movement Mechanics: The fugitive’s exact location is concealed, adding tension as the Government attempts to uncover their path.
- Encounter Cards: Each turn begins with narrative challenges that influence gameplay and strategy.
- Local Population Interaction: The fugitive’s actions can sway the local populace, impacting their chances of success.
- Government Assistance Deck: The Government player has access to powerful resources to aid the hunt, enhancing their capabilities.
- Extensive Playtesting: The game’s mechanics were refined through numerous iterations and feedback, ensuring a balanced and engaging experience.
Conclusion
The journey of developing Siberian Manhunt has been both challenging and rewarding. Eyer meticulously crafted the game’s mechanics, balancing the asymmetric nature of gameplay to create a tense and immersive experience. The thematic depth draws players into a Cold War narrative, where every decision can mean the difference between survival and capture. Following successful demos at notable conventions, the game has garnered attention, paving the way for a promising Kickstarter launch in February 2025. As Eyer prepares for a sequel-expansion, Manchurian Manhunt, the adventure continues, promising to expand the universe and deepen the gameplay experience.
