Since the return of the LEGO Harry Potter range in 2018, the brick company from Billund has continued to surprise us. Following this year’s release of its Hedwig mechanical model, and the Monstrous Book of Monsters set expected to arrive in Europe soon, LEGO has just announced four new, somewhat unusual sets scheduled for January 1, 2021. In fact, these will be LEGO Harry Potter books to build!

We’re not used to seeing new releases at the beginning of the year, as the Harry Potter range usually launches during the summer. But we can expect another wave in June or July with more classic sets, as we’ve seen over the past three years.

Four Classrooms for Four Houses

LEGO hasn’t stopped with the buildable books that follow the 2-in-1 design already used by the LEGO Disney Storybook collection. After the Monstrous Book of Monsters, the company is offering 4 new buildable volumes, each in the colors of Hogwarts’ four houses. But it doesn’t stop there—each book can be opened to form a dedicated classroom during the lessons taught by the head of the house in question.

Thus, in the brown-orange book dedicated to Gryffindor, we find the Transfiguration course. Minerva McGonagall teaches Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger how to transform animals into objects!

The green book, dedicated to Slytherin, features walls lined with shelves filled with ingredients for Severus Snape’s Potions class. The teacher is joined by Draco Malfoy and Seamus Finnigan. It seems Finnigan accidentally blew up his cauldron… poor Seamus.

The beige book representing Hufflepuff reveals a botanical greenhouse. Cédric Diggory and Neville Longbottom attend Pomona Sprout’s Herbology class, which appears to focus on mandrakes and pumpkins.

Finally, the book dedicated to Ravenclaw, in a bluish-gray color, lets us learn the famous Wingardium Leviosa (remember: “It’s leviosa, not leviosà”) during a Charms lesson taught by Filius Flitwick. Cho Chang and Harry do their best to levitate the quill.

LEGO You Can Take Anywhere

Once you’ve played enough with your characters, it’s time to put them away. And if you often complain about the space LEGO takes up, this time that’s no longer an excuse! With just two or three simple steps, the walls fold back to once again form the book. A way to take it anywhere with you—play at a friend’s house, for example, or store it… why not in your own library?

The different books can also be combined by placing them side by side. The 4 books can be arranged this way to create a 360° universe. Each book will cost €29.99, or €120 if you want the complete collection.

What We Like (and Don’t Like) About LEGO Harry Potter “Hogwarts Moments”

You can’t expect LEGO to deliver the same high-quality experience as Diagon Alley or Hogwarts Castle. These sets are primarily intended for children, with a playful purpose before being collector’s items.

You might regret the use of so many stickers—for windows, potion shelves, paintings… Of course, it’s necessary to be able to close the books, but it’s still a rather disappointing option in terms of ease of use.

The colors chosen for the books are fairly understated, blending seamlessly into a library without standing out too much. Some might have preferred bolder colors—bright red for Gryffindor and emerald green for Slytherin. But it’s hard to criticize LEGO’s more neutral choice for this occasion. The exterior of the books is also very attractive, featuring the course logo along the edge.

As for the minifigures included this time, we can be pleased with the presence of characters who aren’t often represented. For example, Pomona Sprout is sold only in the minifigure series—and that makes the new set even more appealing. Flitwick also takes on the appearance of the first two films, a true novelty in LEGO’s history! Cédric Diggory in botanical attire, Cho Chang in her Ravenclaw robes, or Seamus Finnigan further enhance the appeal of these sets.

We can easily predict the success of these new sets—certainly original, visually appealing, and priced reasonably.
