Designer Diary: OUTFOX the FOX

by Jeff Grisenthwaite

A captivating trivia night at the pub has a certain magic that brings friends together. Participants engage in spirited debates over answers, uncover unexpected knowledge, and share in the collective groans of wrong guesses, only to erupt in cheers when a surprising answer is revealed. These exhilarating moments inspired the creation of OUTFOX the FOX.

The Target Audience

The game was designed with a specific audience in mind—Jeff’s brother, Mike. Growing up as the popular athlete while Jeff embraced his inner nerd, Mike enjoys games that are easy to learn and foster interaction without the burden of complex rules. Trivia is a favorite for his family, making it the perfect foundation for a game that could entertain both brothers.

Key Features

  • Team-based gameplay that enhances collaboration
  • Accessible trivia questions that challenge yet engage players
  • Simplified rules for a more fluid game experience
  • Humorous and relatable topics that spark lively discussions
  • A mix of real and fake answers to keep players guessing
  • Over 250 unique questions to ensure variety in gameplay

The Evolution of the Game

The initial prototype of the game revolved around horse racing and top 10 lists. Players would write answers to questions like:

  • Countries with the largest populations
  • Movies rated highest on IMDb
  • The most popular sports globally

However, the first iteration faced significant challenges, including a lack of teamwork and overly complicated betting mechanics. Recognizing the need for change, Jeff aimed to create a game that captured the essence of a trivia night, emphasizing collaboration and fun.

The revised version transformed the format into a one-vs-many setup where players could work together to guess the order of answers. By simplifying the trivia to top five lists and allowing the question reader to pick familiar subjects, the game became more accessible and engaging. The theme shifted from horses to a cunning fox, emphasizing the thrill of deception.

Winning Recognition

After numerous playtests with friends and family, including Mike, Jeff entered the game in a design contest hosted by The Board Game Workshop. Initially named Fox Five, the game won first place in the light game category, leading to discussions with Curt Covert of Smirk & Dagger about publishing possibilities.

Refining the Game

With Curt’s feedback, Jeff replaced traditional trivia questions with those designed to provoke amusing debates. Questions now include topics like:

  • Gross habits people admit to in public
  • Funniest English words according to scientific studies
  • The most mundane activities in life

The collaboration expanded the question pool to 250, ensuring endless replayability while simplifying scoring to enhance the competitive spirit. The final components of OUTFOX the FOX packed a wealth of fun into a compact box.

Conclusion

In a market long overdue for a fresh trivia experience, OUTFOX the FOX aims to fill that gap. Jeff hopes it will bring the excitement of pub trivia nights into homes everywhere, allowing players to share laughter and friendly competition. Special thanks go to Mike for being the inspiration behind this engaging game.
