Love is a Beatdown

When it comes to family game nights, there’s a rule that reigns supreme at Casa de Bell: if the kids want to play a game from the adult game closet, the answer is always yes. The only exception? The complex game Voidfall, which remains off-limits for now. As the children grow older, many of the adult games are transitioning into the family game collection, making it increasingly enjoyable to introduce them to new mechanics and concepts.

Recently, a request arose from the nine-year-old for a game of Thunder Road: Vendetta. His enthusiasm stemmed from two main aspects: he wanted to explore the base game alongside the Carnival of Chaos expansion, which features an arena-style map he finds captivating. More importantly, he was eager for a rematch to see if he could defeat his dad again.

In their first encounter with Carnival of Chaos, he had managed to acquire a powerful “Super-Weapon” named Li’l Sammy, which he used to take down his dad’s chopper—normally impervious to attacks—and claimed victory by eliminating all of his father’s cars. This triumph led to days of playful gloating, with comments about Li’l Sammy becoming a recurring theme in their daily conversations.

Despite the ensuing weeks filled with requests to play various other games, the anticipation for a rematch persisted. One day, while rummaging through the game closet, the nine-year-old spotted the striking red all-in Maximum Chrome edition of Thunder Road and immediately recalled the legendary Li’l Sammy.

Key Features of Thunder Road: Vendetta

  • Engaging Gameplay: Players navigate through an arena filled with hazards and other cars, utilizing various strategies and weapons.
  • Multiple Expansions: The game includes expansions like Carnival of Chaos and Choppe Shoppe, which introduce new mechanics and crew leaders.
  • Asymmetric Powers: Each crew leader possesses unique abilities, allowing for varied strategies during gameplay.
  • Super-Weapons: Players can acquire powerful weapons that enhance their capabilities, adding excitement and unpredictability to the game.
  • Quick Playtime: Games tend to be faster-paced, especially with higher player counts, making it suitable for family gatherings.

After setting up the game, the father and son eagerly dove into the action. The Carnival of Chaos arena was filled with pop-up hazards and the potential for car eliminations, creating a thrilling atmosphere. With various Super-Weapon tokens scattered across the board, both players sought to gain the upper hand.

As the game progressed, the father managed to secure powerful Super-Weapons, including the Big Friendly Gun, which allowed him to inflict significant damage on his son’s cars. Despite the son’s attempts to retaliate with weapons like the Laser Kebab, he faced challenges as his cars succumbed to the relentless assault.

In a climactic moment, the father executed a dramatic elimination by slamming his son’s final car into a chopper, resulting in a victory that showcased both strategy and a bit of luck. Although the legendary Li’l Sammy never made an appearance, the experience was filled with laughter, friendly banter, and cherished memories.

Playing games with the kids brings immense joy, and the opportunity to engage in competitive fun while creating lasting memories is invaluable. The thrill of a well-fought match, whether resulting in victory or defeat, only enhances the family bond. As the kids continue to grow, their desire to challenge their dad ensures that many more game nights are on the horizon.
